Item Description
3.5x5.5". Postcard displays beautiful team image featuring 18 members of the 1905 Philadelphia Athletics baseball club. At this point in time, Connie Mack, future National Baseball Hall of Fame manager, was beginning to bring in key players that would form the foundation of the future Philadelphia Athletics dynasty soon to come. Following the age-old philosophy of building a championship team around a top quality pitching staff, the 1905 Athletics boasted three starting pitchers who would all go on to become National Baseball Hall of Famers: Eddie Plank, Chief Bender and Rube Waddell. This 1905 Philadelphia ball club would finish with a regular season record of 92-56-4, good enough to win the American League pennant that season. Unfortunately, the Athletics ran into a very tough team in the 1905 World Series, losing to the New York Giants and their own pitching ace, Christy Mathewson. All team members are identified below team photo on front with handwritten notations from sender. Postcard has been postally used with a postmark date of October 21, 1905, right around the time of the Athletics-Giants World Series. Writing on front and back accounts for the technical grade of 1 Poor but team image displays nicely for the grade.
