Item Description
1.25” w/ W&H July 21, 1896 patent on curl. To condense the back story found in Button Power by Carter/Hake page 10: The first serial literary character to appear on a button was a creation of Rebecca Sophia “Sophie May” Clarke, whose 45 books between 1860 and 1903 earned her the title “the Dickens of the nursery.” Her nieces inspired three little girl characters- among them Dotty Dimple; however, her appearance on this Ramsdell Sweet & Co. ad button likely netted no revenue as the advertiser cleverly called his endorsement child “Dottie Dimple”. Hairline 3/8” split by collet in the making. Exc, but displays above grade.
