Item Description
3.5x5.25” glazed cotton on original 10.5” long wooden stick. A rare glazed cotton mourning flag bearing a bearded portrait of Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by the text “The Nation Mourns! April 15, 1865.” The canton design features thirteen stars arranged in a medallion pattern, w/a single star in each corner and eight stars encircling a larger central star. This flag is unlisted in Herbert Ridgeway Collins’ Threads of History, the authoritative reference on American political textiles. Collins documented no mourning flags and only one mourning textile- a banner now in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. While a few mourning textiles are known, this is the only printed mourning flag we have encountered in 57 years of observation and research. The portrait and inscription correspond to designs used on contemporary Lincoln mourning envelopes (letter covers) from the period. Condition notes include a small hole affecting the center of the lower-left encircling star and a clean 1.5" vertical fabric separation at the right edge of the canton. Overall, VF. This artifact represents a remarkable survivor and would serve as an impressive piece in any collection focused on Lincoln mourning or nineteenth-century political textiles. Bearded-portrait Lincoln flags from the 1864 presidential campaign rank among the most sought-after political artifacts within the collecting community, often eluding even the most advanced collectors. Although diminutive in scale, this flag is monumental in historical significance—almost certainly produced in connection with Lincoln’s funeral train, which traveled more than 1,700 miles and stopped in 180 cities across seven states, retracing the route Lincoln had taken to Washington as President-elect. In the 160 years since that solemn journey, no other printed portrait mourning flags of this type have surfaced. A likely unique example and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the most evocative and significant mourning artifacts associated with the death of the Great Emancipator.
