Item Description
4.5x6.75" die-cut tin litho toy, made in Spain in the 1930s by Rogelio Sanchiz as marked "La 'Isla' R.S." Toy features jointed Felix the Cat and Mickey Mouse, who each bend over in turn to light their cigars at candle's die-cut flame-shaped window, sparks visible through translucent red celluloid window panel when plunger on back is pushed. Toy features great color and designe, w/beautiful early depictions of Felix and Mickey. Toy still sparks and is evenly aged. Tin lithograhy shows some wear at Felix's die-cut ear and his waist, which were once bent. his resulted in some streaks of bare metal showing at these spots. Small spot of surface oxidation at lower left; this appears to have stabilized. Fine overall. Rare and the most desirable pre-war Spanish Disney character toy, this being the first we've offered in our 58 years. Philip Samuels Collection.
