Item Description
2-3/8x2-7/8. Goudey Gum Co.’s first baseball card issue was a 239 card set released in 1933. Cards feature choice color art front and bio text backs. Gehrig, appropriately nicknamed “The Iron Horse”, thanks to his record 2,130 consecutive games played streak, began his MLB career w/the New York Yankees, playing only a handful of games in 1923 and 1924 before becoming club’s first baseman for the next 14 seasons until his forced retirement in 1939 due to ALS. At the peak of his career during the late 1920s to mid 1930s, Lou teamed w/the incomparable Babe Ruth to form the greatest one-two punch in MLB history. Gehrig would go on to post career numbers of .340 batting average to go along w/493 home runs, 1,995 RBI’s, 1,888 runs scored and a career OPS of 1.080. Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
