Item Description
1-7/16x2-5/8”. Featuring distinctive gold-leaf borders, these cards were issued in a number of different cigarette brand packages. American League cards feature a color lithograph of the player inside a stylized baseball diamond. National League cards have head-and-shoulders portraits on a plain background along w/the first-ever use of facsimile autographs in a major card set. Card backs contain the player’s full name and statistics. Cy Young began his Major League career w/the Cleveland Spiders in 1890 and would remain w/that club through the 1898 season before a brief two-year stint in St. Louis followed by an eight year stretch w/the Boston (AL) team. Young would set numerous career pitching records, including the still-standing totals of 511 wins, 315 losses, 815 games started, 749 complete games and 7,356 innings pitched. Young was held in such high esteem by MLB that many years later, each league’s annual best pitcher award would be named the Cy Young award in his honor. Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.
