Item Description
1.5x2.75”. Designated as E94 in the American Card Catalogue, this issue is nearly identical to several contemporary candy and caramel sets. Issued by the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Mass., cards feature color-tinted bw player photos. Each card can be found w/one of seven different background colors. Backs carry a set checklist and come in numerous variations. Nap Lajoie is widely regarded as the greatest second baseman in the American League during the pre-war era. Lajoie compiled some incredible statistics during his 21 year MLB career w/Cleveland & Philadelphia (1896-16). He is credited w/the highest single season batting average in modern MLB history, registering an astounding .426 mark in 1901, the same season that he won the American League’s first Triple Crown. Lajoie would finish his career w/a batting average of .338 along w/1,504 runs scored, 1,599 RBI’s and 380 stolen bases, all incredible numbers for the dead ball-era that he played in. Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.
