Item Description
4.75x6/5” glossy silver gelatin photograph. Team is posed in front of stadium seating, a total of 15 team members are shown in full uniforms. Although still a relative youngster at this time, the biggest star on this team would be Tetelo Vargas, a native of Santo Domingo, D. R. (front row, third from left). Also shown are fellow US Negro/Cuban League stars: Miguel Gonzalez, Julio Rojo and Chet Brewer. A true five-tool talent, Tetelo began his US Negro Leagues career in 1927 with the Cuban Stars, where he would remain through the 1931 season. Subsequently, Vargas would become a star outfielder for the 1938-44 New York Cubans. However, his Latin American baseball exploits were what really set Tetelo apart from many of the other Negro League stars of the day. During the 1940s, Vargas split his time between the Cuban, Puerto Rican and Mexican Winter Leagues. Tetelo led Puerto Rico in batting during the 1943-44 season with a .410 average. Brewer was one of the tallest pitchers of his day, standing at 6’4” tall, and beginning his US Negro Leagues career w/the Kansas City Monarchs in 1925 and would spend most of his time in the US playing for the Monarchs through the 1946 season. Over the years, Chet also spent brief stints with the Brooklyn Royal Giants, New York Cubans and Philadelphia Stars, among others. Brewer posted his Best NL season in 1929 fashioning a 17-3 mark for KC leading the team to the Negro National League pennant. During the offseason, Chet would play winter ball in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Photo reverse has “Lescano” photographer’s stamp, penciling/notations, typed caption text and ink stamp date of 11/2/1930. Some scrapbook paper remnants at corner areas. Lt. handling wear. Front image remains bold and sharp. Richard Merkin Collection.
