Item Description
7x9.75” glossy silver gelatin photograph. Presented here is a truly captivating image depicting 12 team members in full uniform representing one of Cuba’s greatest early baseball clubs, highlighted by the inclusion of a pair of Negro League baseball’s all-time greats, future National Baseball Hall of Famer, Cristobal Torriente and superstar infielder, Dick Lundy. In addition, Cuban baseball pioneer, Armando Marsans is also pictured here as well as US Negro League stars, Valentin Dreke, Ramon Herrera, Emilio Palmero and Jose Maria Fernandez. Torriente spent his early U.S. playing days debuting for the Cuban Stars, an independent ball club at that time as the Negro National League would not be formally established until 1920. He also spent some of his pre-NL days starring for a barnstorming All-Nations club during the late 1910’s. By 1920, Rube Foster had already lured Torrienete to play for his Chicago American Giants, who won the NNL championship during the league’s first three years of existence. He would remain w/Chicago until 1926 when he was traded to the Kansas City Monarchs for one season before another brief stint w/the Detroit Stars, ending in 1928. While excelling during the summer in the US Negro Leagues, Torriente played winter ball in Cuba nearly every season of his career. Cristobal was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. Dick Lundy began his U.S. Negro Leagues career w/the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants beginning in 1916 and spending nearly a dozen seasons w/them through the summer of 1928. Lundy would also spend scattered time w/the Hilldale Daisies, New York Lincoln Giants, Philadelphia Stars and Newark Eagles among others. Lundy would also spend a total of eight winter league seasons playing in Cuba. Dick is certainly on the short list of future candidates who stand the best chance of being selected for the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Moderate handling wear w/creasing but mostly only seen in reflected light. Richard Merkin Collection.
