Item Description
7.25x8.75” glossy silver gelatin photograph. Great image of Ray in uniform and posed on a ball field w/stadium seating and signage behind him, during his 1953 Cuban Winter league season with the Tigres de Marianao. Dandridge is widely regarded as the greatest all-around third baseman in Negro League history. He began his US Negro Leagues career in 1933, splitting time that initial season between the Detroit Stars, Nashville Elite Giants and Newark Dodgers. Beginning in 1936, Dandridge would spend the vast majority of his remaining Negro League time w/the Newark Eagles, playing for future National Baseball Hall of Fame executive, Effa Manley. During the late 1930s, he was part of Newark’s “million-dollar infield”, also consisting of Willie Wells, Dick Seay and Mule Suttles. Ray would finish his NL career with a .355 batting average to go along with three All-Star selections. Throughout the 1940s, Dandridge would spent nearly every winter season playing ball in Latin America, beginning w/the 1939-40 Venezuelan League season for Caracas' Vargas team. Subsequently, Ray would also spend winters playing in Cuba and Mexico. In 1949, at age 35, Dandridge was signed by MLB’s New York Giants franchise and assigned to their Triple-A farm club in Minneapolis. His first three years w/the team, Ray compiled batting averages of .363, .311 and .324, in addition to taking home a league MVP award in 1950. Despite his Minor League accomplishments, the Giants never gave Dandridge a shot at the Major Leagues, and he retired after the 1954 baseball season. Ray was ultimately recognized for his career accomplishments w/election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987. Back of photo has publication notations for Cuban magazine “Bohemia” w/date of 1953 as well as photographer’s stamp “RFM Habana.” Minimal handling wear, front has bold and sharp image. Richard Merkin Collection.
