Item Description
3x6.75” glossy silver gelatin photograph. Torriente was to Negro League baseball during the 1920s what Willard Brown was to the Negro Leagues during the 1940s. Although most recognized for his prodigious home run blasts, Cristobal also possessed tremendous speed on the bases as well as covering an enormous amount of ground in the outfield. Portrayed beautifully on this full-length pose while grasping his weapons of mass destruction, he is in his Habana Leones uniform, a club that he would star for over numerous Cuban winter league seasons during the 1920s. He spent his early US playing days debuting for the Cuban Stars, an independent ball club at that time as the Negro National League would not be formally established until 1920. He also spent some of his pre-NL days starring for a barnstorming All-Nations club during the late 1910s. By 1920, Rube Foster had already lured Torrienete to play for his Chicago American Giants, who won the NNL championship during the league’s first three years of existence. Cristobal would remain w/Chicago until 1926 when he was traded to the Kansas City Monarchs for one season before another brief stint w/the Detroit Stars, ending in 1928. While excelling during the summer in the US Negro Leagues, he played winter ball in Cuba nearly every season of his career. He was ultimately recognized for his tremendous career accomplishments w/enshrinement to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. Back of photo has various publication notations. Minimal handling wear, photo remains clean and glossy. Richard Merkin Collection.
