Item Description
Two complete litho button sets issued in cereal boxes. The insignia set of 36 is 13/16" dia.; 18 were issued in 1943 w/18 more in 1945. The plane set is larger 1-1/8" dia. size. Four green planes were released in 1943 w/four brown planes following in 1945 which come both in a photographic style as well as an illustration style against hand-drawn cloud bkgs. Both sets were created by legendary "Premium King" Sam Gold. Gordon Gold, who joined his father just after World War II, related the FDA-required inks and a glossy coating lower in hardness but less toxic in case kids chewed the buttons. The inks used were very susceptible to chipping and the gloss finish was a magnet for dust. Both sets have scattered typical traces of wear and aging, but buttons are glossy w/strong color and mostly Fine to VF overall. Each set comes in custom display case w/glass top hinged lid and each button is in a custom plastic case w/removable lid and foam insert. Ready for display. Sets come w/pair of 6.25x7.25" newspaper advertising proofs. Both feature boy in beanie and each shows a different group of six insignia pins. One has .5" margin tear at bottom and is VF, other is Exc. Rare ephemera pair to go w/the button sets. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold.
