Item Description
The Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship and Restaurant opened in Disneyland's Fantasyland in 1955. Sponsored by Chicken of the Sea brand tuna, the restaurant was aboard a large pirate ship-shaped building, closely modeled on Captain Hook's ship from Disney's 1953 animated classic Peter Pan (and would change its name to Captain Hook's Galley when Chicken of the Sea ended their sponsorship in 1969). One of the hallmarks of the ship during its tenure in the park was the large "Jolly Roger" pirate flag that flew atop one of the ship's masts. When the popular Pirates of the Caribbean attraction opened in 1967, both it and Chicken of the Sea flew these large skull and crossbones flags concurrently. Offered here is a wonderful Disney artifact from days gone by; a massive 74.25x104.5" ornate frame containing vintage flag that was handmade by Disney craftsmen, w/embroidered detailing and two aged brass grommets at left as displayed within the park. Traditionally pirate in design, skull and crossbones design includes the addition of a crack in the skull's forehead which resembles a lightning bolt. Flag has some scattered small snags to surface from display and white portions of flag exhibits even lt. aging. Flag has been neatly and professionally stitched to backing as framed under Plexiglas, making for a wonderful display. VF overall. As this Disneyland attraction was removed in 1982 during the New Fantasyland update, this makes for a delightful nostalgic display.
