Item Description
9x11.75" program w/20 pages for the original 1923 release of Universal's "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" starring Lon Chaney Sr. Program includes "Universal's Special Adaption" of story by Victor Hugo, many photos from the film including a two-page center spread, "Items Of Interest" about the film, information on the "Principal Players," etc. Publication shows wear w/some vertical creases to covers and 1" spot of surface paper lift to back cover. Scattered aging/dust soiling. Pages also have some handling wear but are clean. Spine and 3.75" tear to front cover have archival tape repair. Good overall. Comes w/rare 8x11" letter titled "An Explanation - But Not An Apology" as letter concerns alterations made to the story for film purposes, and mentions "We Have Found It Necessary To Eliminate A Great Deal Of Gore; Blood Curdling Murders And Massacres May Be Described On The Cold Surface Of The Printed Page, But When Reproduced Photographically On The Realistic Screen, They Are A Bit Gruesome." Letter bears Carl Laemmle's facsimile signature. Scattered handling wear w/some small tears along top margin but clean and VG overall. Rare.
