Item Description
Star Wars Weekly was Marvel UK's Star Wars comic series, reprinting their American counterpart's Star Wars comics, typically split into smaller segments and published over a number of issues. As such, the UK adaptation of the first movie stretched across 12 issues, whereas the American adaptation was over six issues. Covers for the Star Wars Weekly adaptation featured eight covers that were exclusive to the UK market while the remainder were repurposed from the American releases. Offered here is 11x16-3/8" artboard w/pen and ink original art for one of the UK exclusive covers, published as the cover of Star Wars Weekly #8 March 29, 1978. Art is by Gil Kane (1926-2000) w/inks by Tony DeZuniga (1932-2012) and shows the pivotal battle between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi from the end of the film with C-3PO and R2-D2 in background as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca look on. Top margin has printed "British Book" along w/"SW" title abbreviation and "4p. 9-17" blue pencil notation. Upper right has printer job stamp w/initials of Kane and DeZuniga. .5x.75" and 1x1-7/8" strips of surface paper lifting to top margin, removing some printed artboard text at center, but not affecting art. Title and Marvel publishing indicia (as well as cover text) are pasted stats. The "Battles" cover text has been hand-lettered and was once attached w/drafting tape, which has since been professionally removed with some minor ink touch-up at this area. Back has Marvel copyright stamp. Margins have some scattered editorial notes and scattered staining. Main image area has some scattered aging to top, primarily under title stat and by "Darth Vader" name stats. Art is otherwise clean and VF. Fresh to market, this is just the second cover art from a Marvel UK adaptation issue to come to auction. This piece (and other Star Wars original art offered in this auction) comes from one collector, and each is an incredible find.
