Item Description
3.5x5.5”. A series of 25 postcards including this team image along with 24 individual Reds members was produced during a very limited time frame between the end of the 1919 MLB regular season and the 1919 World Series where the National League champion Reds took on the American League champion, Chicago White Sox. In addition to being an annual battle of the titans, this World Series would become forever remembered for the Chicago Black Sox scandal where eight team members consorted w/known gamblers to throw the World Series outcome. The beneficiaries of this tragic event were the Reds, who finished the regular season w/a final record of 96-44 under manager Pat Moran. The offensive charge was led by future National Baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Roush, who won the NL batting title that season with an average of .321 and Heinie Groh, who finished close behind with a .310 batting average. The mound corps was led by Slim Sallee with a 21-7 record as four of the club’s five starting pitchers posted winning percentages above .700. Photo shows 24 team members, all identified at bottom. Back has postmark of October 1, 1919 from Cincinnati, Ohio meaning that it was mailed during the most famous World Series in baseball history. Inked message reads "Saw These Boys Play Today" further adding to the lore of this card. Back markings largely account for the technical grade but front displays much nicer w/strong team image.
