Item Description
This rare toy could have been made as early as 1931, making it one of the earliest Mickey Mouse mechanical toys. 7x7x3" deep box has illustrated lid w/large illustration name of the toy along w/"Copyright Walt E. Disney" text. Two text side panels include the "Nifty" logo and "Geo. Borgfeldt & Co. - New York - Sole Licensees & Distributors" text along w/"No. 6/1905/56" designation. Other two side panels w/illustrations show Mickey Mouse posting his own movie attraction poster, as another Mickey sits on a soap box and a third Mickey looks startled beside sign reading "Look For Other Nifty Toys." Box is 100% original and in its original state w/o restoration, color touch-ups or any replacement of cardboard. All eight paper corner seals appear original. Lid has one corner split w/another being partially split. Main lid panel has handwritten note in pencil. Lid has some scattered moisture staining, most notably large area at lower left corner. Bottom of box has scattered staining and underside has extensive handwritten calculations in pencil and some scattered spots of dark staining. VG/Fine overall, but still quite nice for display purposes. The toy consists of an all-metal scooter w/built-in key to wind the mechanism which then causes the toy to move in a direction determined by the front wheel as a metal bell on the rear platform rings continuously. A single narrow metal strap over one foot holds the superbly sculpted all celluloid 5.25" tall Mickey Mouse figure, which has movable head and is jointed at shoulders. One leg is also jointed just below pants, allowing for jaunty pose, which reveals original paper label strip. Mickey's right hand has a hole as made, to hold onto the wire handlebar of the scooter (as shown on box). The handlebar wire has trace silver flashing and shows scattered aging. Wear on toy is o/w largely limited to a couple tiny spots of paint nicks to scooter edges, not distracting. The metal wheel hubs have trivial wear and the thin rubber tires remains intact w/o cracks. Front of Mickey's pants have raised "Mickey Mou" partial name, while his curved celluloid tail sweeps gracefully upward to the left of two accent pants buttons. Tiny raised "Made In Japan" text on back. Figure has denting to nose and tiny hole in celluloid on one ear. Back of the scooter features smiling sun logo w/"Nifty" name below, flanked by the words "Another Nifty Toy." Bell has some trace aging. Fine/VF overall. Among the most sought after of all 1930s Mickey Mouse toys. Philip Samuels Collection.
