Item Description
9" tall tin litho wind-up w/built-in key on back. Made in Germany for the English market, c.1930. Thought to have been made by Saalheimer & Strauss, makers of the tin Mickey Mouse mechanical banks (also offered in this auction). Small text by key reads "By Exclusive Arrangement With Ideal Films Ltd. All Rights Reserved. Registered No. 508041." Bottom of Mickey's paint leg has small "Foreign" text. Mickey is depicted w/five fingers as opposed to the more commonly seen four fingers style. Die-cut eyes and wide smile reveal separate tin litho plate within Mickey's head, that when figure is wound, this plate moves up and down, giving the toy the appearance of moving eyes and mouth. Toy also revolves around as teeth move in and out. Toys shows scattered aging and wear w/small paint nicks/scratches and has 5/8" long dent above one eye. White portion of face shows scattered small spots of bare metal. Slight fade to front of Mickey's red pant. Missing original rubber tail. Figure has had scattered restoration, mainly in the form of black touch-ups. Works when wound. Displays Fine. The rarest of all Mickey Mouse wind-up toys, w/only a few examples known to still exist, this being just the second example we've offered in our 58 years. Philip Samuels Collection.
