Item Description
Post introduced a series of tin litho rings featuring popular comicstrip character in the late 1940s, w/the first set of 12 being released in 1948. Offered here is 8.75x10.5" cardstock pop-out sign promoting that first set, issued in boxes of Post's Raisin Bran. ©1948 Famous Artists Syndicate. Sign reads "Free Colorful Metal Comic Rings - One Packed In Every Ring Package Of.." beside box image w/illustrations of Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie and Herby rings. Image of box has promotional text reading "In This Package! Colorful Metal Comic Ring - No Money - No Box Tops." Vertical fold at center w/additional verical fold at left/right having adhesive strips on back as designed. These are unused. Sign has some warping and corner tip wear but remains unused w/price circles left blank. VF overall. Great graphics. Rare and just the second we've offered in our 58 years. Comes w/seven 15-1/8x20" progressive proof sheets for trade publication promoting two different premiums - "Circus Fun Book" and "Comic Rings," showing all 12 rings in the set, as well as instructions and ad mat w/ordering information at bottom. Top sheet features full color and has "A Creation Of Sam Gold - Premium King" foil crown sticker. Sheets have vertical fold at center w/moderate pinch creasing. Fine overall. 9x17-3/8" acetate sheet features film negative showing six of the 12 ring designs. Back has all over opaque hand-painted. Sheet has "A Creation Of Sam Gold - Premium King" foil crown sticker on back. Lower left corner has large chip and aged tape repair on back to 3" crack. VG. Lot also includes two vintage newspaper ads for the secong series of 24 rings issued in 1949. Popeye, The Phantom, Felix the Cat and others are clearly seen. Ads show moderate wear w/edge chips/tears and just comes along, but are reference material from the archives. See Comic Rings near set/sign, following lot.
